Start: 7:30 am. for Marathon. 9 am for Half Hermit. 10:30am for Lucky Hermit 13 K. Start line for all runs will be at A Painted View Ranch (APV) on Hermit Road. The Finish line will be at APV in front of the Cantina.

Course: The Hermit Pass Marathon will start at A Painted View Ranch and follow Hermit Rd up to the summit of Hermit Pass and then return down the same route but turn north on to the Rainbow Trail, to North Taylor Creek Road, then onto North Taylor Road to Ute Mesa Trail and then south to Hermit Road and back to A Painted View Ranch. Elevation gain for the first 11 miles is a gradual steady climb from 7878 ft to 13,050 ft., approx, 5,072 ft.total. The closer the trail gets to the top of the pass, the more rocky and primitive and difficult it becomes. The run down Hermit Road is very tough. The Half Hermit (Half Marathon) will start at the same point, go up Hermit Road 6.55 miles and return to the starting point without any deviation in the route. The half marathon turn around is not at the top of the pass, but will turn around at about 10,350 ft. altitude on Hermit Road. THIS IS A MODERATELY DIFFICULT COURSE FOR WELL PREPARED ATHLETES.
The Lucky Hermit 13K (8.3 miles) will start at the same point, go up Hermit Road and turn north on to Ute Mesa Trail, to Pines Road, then to Kettle Lane and back to Hermit Road, to the finish line at A Painted View Ranch. This is all dirt/gravel county roads with some washboard. The most elevation gain is about 1000’ ft at the beginning and then it becomes gently rolling as it makes the loop back around to the start. THIS IS AN EASY COURSE FOR ALL RUNNERS. (This route may be changed - please check back.)
The Hermit Pass road on county property will NOT be closed to traffic at the start of the Hermit and Half Hermit. Be aware of traffic and run against the traffic as much as possible. The Forest Service portion of Hermit Road will not be closed to public traffic, but signs will be posted over the summer advising people of the event and asking them to avoid using the road during the run. Lucky Hermit runners should keep to the LEFT side and watch for traffic.
Timing: Manual timing, we will do splits at the 6.05 mile point (turn around for the Half Hermit), and at the Hermit Pass summit turn around for the marathon.
Mandatory Cut off and other course time limits: The marathon course will close at the Hermit Pass turn around at 1pm., and runners will be turned back if they are still on the course as the race officials sweep the course from Hermit Pass down.

No limit for entries for the Half Hermit or Lucky Hermit. Accepted entries will be emailed confirmation of their entry from HPM and a list posted here at the Hermit Pass Marathon webpage.
Waivers: You will be emailed a confirmation waiver. This signed waiver must be presented at check in or on file in order for you to receive your bib.
Race Check-In - Bib Pickup: Plan to pick up your bib and t-shirt Saturday at A Painted View Ranch between 3pm and 5 pm. or Sunday am. within an hour of the start time. All participants must present a picture ID to check in and sign their waiver. Replacement waivers will be available. Check in by or for family or friends is not permitted.
Race Packet: All items offered to participants at Race Check in are for Participants only.
Race Cancellation or Course Adjustments: Due to extreme weather conditions, the possibility exists that the Marathon course will altered or shortened. Every effort will be made to hold the race as planned, but the Board of Directors/Race Director reserves the right to delay, adjust cutoff times, shorten or even cancel the event for weather related or other reasons. If hostile weather conditions develop in the mountains after the start of the race, the road above Horseshoe Lake overlook turn (timberline) may be closed and all competitors required to turn around at that point. Bibs of runners who are turned back will be marked and they will be directed on to any adjustments down on the Valley floor in order to keep the same distance if it is possible to do so in a safe manner. There will be no refunds in the event of race cancellation or course adjustment once the race has started.
Behavior Policy: Be nice.
Aid Stations: There will be aid stations with beverages, and snacks, and basic first aid items. We plan to have at least one EMT, RN or MD at each aid station. The actual items will be posted on the website and at APV once it has been finalized. Refreshments will also be provided at the finish line. However, this is not highly supported race, so entrants should be prepared to carry what they need.
Equipment Drop at Timberline: Marathon participants who wish to have extra gear available at timberline, such as a jacket, hat, gloves, snacks, etc. will have the opportunity to put their gear in a bag which will be marked with their Bib number, and then transported to the timberline (Horseshoe Lake) aid station. Drop off bags must be ready before 6:45 am. at the registration desk/Drop Bag area.
Awards: An award will be given for all finishers of each event. If warranted by the number of participants, special awards for each event will be given to overall M/F winners in 3 categories: Open, Masters (40-59) and Seniors (60+) and awards will be given to the top three finishers in each age/sex category in 5 yr. increments up to age 75. The awards ceremony will be held at A Painted View Ranch cantina beginning 2-3 pm. depending on when most runners finish.
Emergency Provisions: Mountain rescue support, including EMT’s and first-aid personnel will attempt to cover the entire course. Participant is responsible for any evacuation or medical costs incurred by helicopter, ground search, rescue and emergency transportation. Due to the rural nature of the race venue, medical facilities are limited. There is fairly good cell phone coverage over most all of the course.

Altitude Community Fitness: Discount passes for participants will be provided for the weekend of the event, and at Race Check in. ACF is a community owned and operated not for profit facility with a heated indoor pool, sauna, functional fitness area, and weight room, and is the producer and benefactor of this event.
Pre- Race Dinner: You are on your own. There are a number of restaurants in Westcliffe that will be open Saturday night. (subject to change, so please check back)
Post-Race Amenities: Food and beverages, beer and wine will be available for participants, and visitors may purchase after the run. Relax for awhile in the Ranch Cantina (see www.apaintedview.com/rentals-cantina) and enjoy the ambiance. We hope Massage will be provided near the finish line and Cantina, again this year by Desiree Dallaguardia, a triathlete, functional fitness instructor and Licensed massage therapist.
Race Orientation: If you'd like an orientation, please email me before Saturday Sept 16.
Restrictions: No ski poles, hiking poles, walking sticks, or other aids are permitted except for the marathon runners who may use poles/sticks for the upper part of the course. No headphones. No animals with participants. Bib numbers must be visible at all times! Runners must stay on road from start to finish, cutting switchbacks will result in disqualification.
Timing and Results: Timing will be done manually. Final Results will be posted at the finish line and on the marathon page at www.altitudecommunityfitness.org and www.clubamericawmv.org after the race.
Part of this run is on the National Forest and will be under a special use permit issued by the San Carlos Ranger District, San Isabel National Forest.
